Heat Pump Services in Buford, GA

Ask ten Buford homeowners what they think about heat pumps and you’ll get ten different answers and at least half of them will be based on something they heard years ago that isn’t accurate anymore.

Heat pumps have come a long way. The technology has advanced significantly, and for a climate like ours here in Gwinnett County, they’re genuinely one of the smartest home comfort investments available. But because of the myths and half-truths floating around, a lot of homeowners are either hesitant to install one or confused about what’s wrong when theirs isn’t working properly.

We’ve been installing, repairing, and maintaining heat pump systems in Buford since 1996. In that time, we’ve had this conversation a lot. So let’s just clear the air on heat pumps, on what they do, and on how we take care of them.

“ A heat pump installed correctly in a Georgia home is one of the most efficient, cost-effective ways to stay comfortable year-round. The key words there are ‘installed correctly’ — and that’s where a lot of systems fall short. ”

Let’s Clear Up the Most Common Heat Pump Myths

Before anything else let’s knock out the misinformation that causes homeowners to make the wrong call on their heat pump.

MYTH: Heat pumps don’t work in cold weather.

REALITY: Modern heat pumps — including the systems we install today — work efficiently well below freezing. Cold-climate heat pump models maintain strong performance even when temperatures drop into the teens. Georgia winters are mild enough that a properly sized heat pump handles the entire heating season without backup in most years.

MYTH: Heat pumps are always blowing lukewarm air — they don’t heat as well as a furnace.

REALITY: A heat pump delivers air at around 90–100°F, compared to a furnace which delivers 120–140°F. The air feels different, but a properly sized heat pump moves enough volume of that air to heat your home just as effectively. If your heat pump is blowing genuinely cold air, something is wrong — that’s a repair issue, not a design flaw.

MYTH: If my heat pump has ice on it in winter, it’s broken.

REALITY: Some frost forming on the outdoor unit in winter is completely normal. Heat pumps have a built-in defrost cycle that handles this automatically. Heavy ice buildup that doesn’t clear, or ice forming on the refrigerant lines, is a different story — that signals low refrigerant or an airflow problem and should be looked at.

MYTH: A heat pump can only heat or cool — not both.

REALITY: A heat pump does both — that’s literally the point. It heats in winter and cools in summer using the same equipment. This is what makes it one of the most cost-effective home comfort systems for Georgia’s climate, where you need both heating and cooling every year.

How a Heat Pump Actually Works In Plain Language

Most people have a vague sense that a heat pump is ‘like an air conditioner that also heats.’ That’s actually pretty close but here’s what’s actually happening:

A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it. In summer, it pulls heat from inside your home and moves it outside exactly like an air conditioner. In winter, it reverses that process by pulling heat energy from the outdoor air (yes, even cold air contains heat energy) and moving it inside your home.

Because it’s moving heat instead of generating it by burning fuel, a heat pump can deliver more energy than it consumes. That’s what gives it its efficiency advantage and it’s why heat pumps typically cost less to operate than gas furnaces or electric resistance heating.

Good to know: The component that makes this work is called the reversing valve — it’s what switches the system between heating and cooling mode. When a heat pump gets ‘stuck’ in cooling mode during winter, or won’t switch properly, this valve is usually the first place we look.

Heat Pump Services We Provide in Buford

Heat Pump Repair

Heat pumps have unique failure points that require a technician who understands both the refrigerant side and the electrical/controls side of the system. Not every HVAC tech has deep experience with heat pumps our team does.

When you call us about a heat pump problem, here’s how we approach it: we listen to what you’re experiencing, we inspect the full system before we diagnose, and we give you a clear explanation of what we found before we quote anything. No part-swapping and hoping for the best.

Heat Pump Installation

Installing a heat pump correctly is more involved than most homeowners realize. The system has to be properly sized for your home, not too large, not too small. The refrigerant lines have to be correctly sized and installed. The electrical supply has to meet the system’s requirements. The thermostat has to be compatible.

When any of these things are off, the system underperforms sometimes dramatically. We’ve seen homeowners who were frustrated with their heat pump performance for years, only to find out the original installation had a sizing or refrigerant charge issue from day one. A proper installation, done right the first time, sets the system up to perform the way it’s designed to.

Heat Pump Maintenance

Heat pumps need maintenance twice a year, once in spring before the cooling season and once in fall before the heating season. Because the system operates year-round in both modes, it accumulates wear and buildup faster than a single-mode system. Annual or biannual tune-ups keep efficiency high, extend system life, and catch developing problems before they become failures.

Is Your Heat Pump Telling You Something? Read the Signs.

Heat pumps communicate through symptoms. Here’s how to read what yours is telling you and what it typically means:

⚠ System blowing cold air in heat mode

Likely causes: Low refrigerant, failed reversing valve, defrost cycle issue, or outdoor unit problem.

What to do: Don’t ignore this. It won’t resolve on its own and will get worse. Call for a diagnostic visit.

⚠ System running constantly without reaching set temperature

Likely causes: Refrigerant leak, undersized system, dirty coils, or thermostat miscalibration.

What to do: Check your air filter first. If it’s clean and the problem persists, a technician needs to measure system performance.

⚠ Heavy ice buildup on outdoor unit

Likely causes: Low refrigerant, failed defrost cycle, blocked airflow, or dirty coils.

What to do: Turn the system off and let it thaw. Do not run it while heavily iced it can damage the compressor. Call for service.

⚠ Unusual noises — grinding, rattling, or squealing

Likely causes: Worn bearings in the fan motor, loose components, or debris inside the unit.

What to do: Grinding and squealing indicate mechanical wear that gets worse quickly. Don’t wait on this one.

⚠ System short cycling — turning on and off every few minutes

Likely causes: Refrigerant issues, thermostat problems, or an oversized system.

What to do: Short cycling puts excessive wear on the compressor, one of the most expensive components in the system. Get it checked.

⚠ Higher energy bills without change in usage

Likely causes: Dirty coils reducing efficiency, low refrigerant, or aging components losing performance.

What to do: An efficiency drop is often gradual you may not notice until the bill arrives. Annual maintenance catches this before it costs you.

Heat Pump Questions We Hear All the Time

It depends on what’s failed. Minor repairs like a capacitor or contactor replacement are relatively affordable. A reversing valve or compressor repair is more involved and costs more. We diagnose fully before quoting — and you always know the price before we start any work.

The cost varies based on system size, efficiency rating, and whether any electrical or ductwork modifications are needed. We offer free estimates we’ll come out, assess your home properly, and give you an accurate number with no surprises. Financing is available if that’s helpful.

A few possibilities: it may have been incorrectly sized or installed, it may have a refrigerant issue from installation, or it may simply have a component that has failed early. These things happen occasionally even with newer equipment. A thorough diagnostic will tell us exactly what’s going on.

Light frost during winter operation is normal and the defrost cycle handles it. If you’re seeing significant ice buildup that isn’t clearing, turn the system to fan-only mode to let it thaw, then call us. Running a heavily iced system can cause serious damage to the compressor.
