How Can I Prepare My Home for the Holidays?

If you’ve got family headed your way for the holidays, here are some of my best tips to make sure your house is safe and sound.

Clear Away Clutter

  • Fall is a great time to declutter your home and make space for guests. While rearranging furniture or switching rugs, it’s important to make sure nothing is blocking your air vents.
  • Curtains, couches, side tables or anything blocking your air vents will reduce air flow and create hot/cold spots.

Clean Dust & Debris

  • As temperatures cool down, people and pets spend more time inside, creating more dust, dirt, and allergens in your home.
  • Clean out all your A/C registers and vents, overhead fan blades, and install fresh HVAC filters.  Fresh filters allow maximum air flow and more comfort while reducing stress on your system.
  • Need a more heavy-duty duct service? We offer duct sealing services that will have your whole system in tip-top shape.

Assess Important Safety Items

  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re functional and have fresh batteries.
  • If you have a fire extinguisher, know where it’s located and how to use it. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher, please be sure to get one. They’re very inexpensive but can save your home and your life.
  • If you have a wood-burning fireplace, have it cleaned and inspected.
  • Have spots in or around your home that become slippery during rain or icy conditions? Consider installing no-slip mats in those places, especially if you will have elderly guests.
  • Don’t use indoor extension cords for outdoor lighting, as they are not equipped for the elements or the electrical load. Also, don’t overload extension cords by plugging in too many things. Use a power strip that will turn off if overloaded.

Give Your HVAC System Some TLC

  • No matter how great your holiday meal might be, a breakdown of your heating system will cool everyone’s joy. It’s much better to proactively find any issues before the holidays and your guests arrive.
  • Seasonal maintenance (cleaning filters, inspecting heating components, calibrating the thermostat, etc) is crucial to pinpoint problems and ensure your heating system performs at maximum efficiency.
  • Your HVAC inspection will look for microscopic gas leaks and also ensure your furnace is properly vented, which is the most likely source of carbon monoxide.
